🦋 IC Information

Character Name: Ren Amamiya
Age: 17
Canon: Persona 5 Royal
Canon Point: 2/2, post-discussion with Maruki and Akechi.
Character History: over here!
Canon Abilities: I'm sorry about the length of this, tbh.

To start, the main ability that most main characters have in the Persona universe is called, well, a Persona, which is a spiritual manifestation of a person's true self. Personas can only be gained with access of a real person to a spiritual realm (in Persona 5 it's called the Metaverse) who has a strong strength of will. For most people who can awaken to this ability (which is considered rare), characters are only allowed one Persona, which can change and evolve with time, and can only be used/summoned for it's abilities in the Metaverse. Personas are categorized as belonging to groups based on tarot cards, and each person will also have a tarot card association.

Now this is where things get complicated. As the protagonist, Ren's card is The Fool, or the Wildcard. This means unlike everybody else, he can gain a basically unlimited amount of Personas. He can gain these by knocking down Shadows in battle and performing a 'hold up', where he basically holds them at gunpoint and tries to convince them to come hang with the cool kids. He can also use this to ask for money or rare items in exchange for letting them bow out of the fight. It's assumed this won't be strictly usable in the setting here since the enemies won't be Shadows, but idk let me know if you want me to go crazy with that.

While Ren does have limits on how many Personas he can hold and use at once, he also has access to a cognitive space called the Velvet Room where he can manage, fuse, and strengthen these Personas, as well as change out which ones are active. At his canonpoint, he can hold 12 personas- since he won't have access to the Velvet Room here, he'll be entering with certain ones assigned and won't be able to switch, fuse, or upgrade them. These 12 will be Satanael, Kohryu, Vohu Manah, Thor, Maria, Yurlungur, King Frost, Titania, Fafnir, Moloch, Baal and Dominion with their default set of skills (I will not get into custom fusing here that would be a nightmare).

Next, another specific note for Persona 5 (independent of other Persona games) is that when Ren is inside a cognitive place in the Metaverse and is considered a threat, he gets a swanky magical girl transformation, and any prop or otherwise 'fake' weaponry can be used as real (as the Metaverse is a place of cognition). Ren gained the ability to expertly use knives the size of his arm, as well as the usage of pistols. In addition, his metaverse outfit comes with a grappling hook he can shoot out of his arm and use to fly off stuff in ways that shouldn't be allowed by physics. Since the setting is a little wibbly-wobbly and isn't technically the 'real' world or the Metaverse, I'm treating this like the act of summoning his Persona shifts him into Metaverse-mode that he can gain or drop at will, as well as transforming whatever weaponry he'd have on him at the time. However, in-game, any injuries that are sustained in the Metaverse don't seem carry over to the real world (you can get shot, stabbed, set on fire, ect and just be fine when you walk out); since there's no true 'end' to the Metaverse here, whatever happens is real all of the time, meaning he'll have to be significantly more careful.

🦋 Personality

Option 1: Answer the following questions. Elaborate on the answer, especially your characters thoughts and feelings surrounding the answer. For Canon Characters, you can choose four questions. For Original Characters, you will need to choose six questions. Keep the word count to 150-400 per question.

  1. Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?

  2. While we don't get a lot in Ren's backstory before the events of the game, a few things are made very clear- his previous life before the events of the game completely dropped him when he showed his 'real self' and fought for what he believed in. If a police record was enough to completely separate him from any friends, his parents, and a total stranger had to take him in, it's evident none of them knew who he really was. To that end, I don't think he's always believed in magic or the supernatural, because his upbringing was more restricted; it would have been outside of something he thought possible. That said, even if he didn't think something like that could be real, he's shown to be very excited about the prospect of the supernatural and once he figures out he has a power others don't he takes to it easily (and noted as more easily/faster than other characters), including things like accepting a random cat could talk like a person. Ren figures that if his whole life could change once, there's not much point in questioning if it could happen again, so after he gets to Tokyo he's much more accepting of things he doesn't understand- and now he's just sort of rolling with the punches and accepting whatever happens, up to and including magic.

  3. If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?

  4. Ren's biggest driving force- the thing that gets him to awaken to his Persona- is directly stated as "his desire to help people in need". It's the thing that drives the creation of the Phantom Thieves and basically all of his actions. So the wish would inevitably be to help the one person he couldn't help- to save the life of Goro Akechi. We even see this shown in Third Semester when Maruki supposedly grants the wishes of everyone in reality- Ren's wish is to see Akechi again, to allow him to live his life in a way he actually wants. Ren has a lot of introspection in-game after Akechi's death that he was the one person Ren couldn't save, especially since not only does he intervene and help in the lives of dozens of people over his journey, Akechi himself says "If we had met a few years earlier, maybe things could have been different". His wish would absolutely have been to give Akechi those years- and help lift the blame he feels for failing a deeply important person when they needed him.

  5. If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.

  6. Carrying off on the above question... Ren has been shown to do nearly anything for his friends, up to and including grievous injury, law breaking, getting kidnapped, making a fool of himself in public, and starting fistfights the middle of the street. To that end, there are a lot of people he would likely run after if they were headed into another realm, because he tends to act first about someone else's well being and think about the consequences to him second. However, if he had to pick one, it would once again likely be Goro Akechi. Aside from the fact that Akechi is Ren's rival and stated as a close friend, once Ren figures out Akechi was pitted against him by a god- a god he goes on to fight and win- it seems only that more unfair that the only other person who truly understood what he was going through was the one he couldn't save. In addition, time and time again Ren is told that as the Trickster, he is the only one who has the power to change the world; this only makes it worse when Akechi is the one person who slips through the cracks. If he had the ability to take another chance at that, be it in another world, timeline, or anything, he would go for it, because he thinks Akechi deserves it- and he's the only one who can, so saving someone else is paramount to his own discomfort or inconvenience.

  7. What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?

  8. Ren's character arc and life is defined by his rebellious nature against the unjust and unfair of everything in the world. Ren's relationship with fate, the machinations of actual (multiple) gods, and the choices he makes are all at their core based around his desire to rebel against an unjust circumstance and world. Multiple times over the course of the game, Ren views a situation where it would be better for his personal well-being if he didn't engage, allowed something bad to happen to another person, or simply accepted there was no way to change something- and every time he acts without question and without remorse, because in his own words, "I can't just look away". Even for people who have wronged him or he's trying to defeat (such as Maruki at the end of Third Semester), he still throws himself from a helicopter to try and save Maruki's life, because he simply won't accept his comfort when someone else is getting the wrong end of a deal. Another way we see this is in the bad end options of Persona 5- every 'bad end' option for the game would be making a choice for Ren to give up. When you get the first option for a bad end in the police interrogation room, the option that keeps him going forward is the unwillingness to rat out the rest of his friends- he only gets the 'bad end' if he chooses to try and save his own skin instead of protecting others. In each subsequent bad end, Ren would be taking deals given to him by corrupt individuals meant to further his own happiness; the only 'true' end is when he never compromises his will to rebel against their authority. He truly believes in a better world, even if it's not one he can imagine, and he will fight to his own end and beyond for the dream of that world.
